Amateur Art Competition

All entries for the Amateur Art Competition are displayed through the duration of Festival weekend for your appreciation and enjoyment, while some are available for your purchase. We invite and receive entries from 3 different classes: Youth (18 – 14),  Teenage artists (age 15-18) and an Open class for 19 years and up.
The competition is committed to:

  • Encouraging the development of creativity in Visual Arts
  • The recognition and support of artistic talent
  • Providing opportunity for learning from being judged professionally
  • Showcasing individual creative style, design and techniques

Youth Class

Open to any artist, age 8 – 14 years old. Entries in this class can be of any subject, in any medium.

Teenage Class

Open to any artist, age 15 to 18 years old. Entries in this class can be of any subject, in any medium.

​Open Class

Open to any artist, 19 years or older. Entries in this class can be of any subject, in any medium.​

How we choose…

The artwork submitted to our competetion will be judged based on the following elements of artistic expression. Ribbons and a prize will be awarded for the submissions that the judges consider to be the best example of the following criteria:

  • Creative Sense of Balance & Composition
    Creativity & originality of the artist’s vision.
    The artistic composition of the overall design.

  • Technical Skill & use of Colour
    The degree of proficiency to which the artist renders a convincing representation of    their vision.
    How well does the artist utilize the components of colour, texture, line & mass.
  • Interpretation of Personal Vision
    Interpretation and the clarity of the artist’s vision.The overall impression of the artwork.

A ribbon and prize will also be awarded to:

Best in Show Award
Ribbon and prize to be awarded to the best in show (decided by the judges).

Future Promise Award
Ribbon and prize to be awarded for the artist who shows the most future promise (from submissions in the Teenage Category).

People’s Choice Award
Selected from all categories by Festival attendees. Winner receives ribbon and prize.

Judging

The Judging Panel will include representatives from the arts and education fields and will be chaired by the Buckhorn Art Competition Committee. Entries are evaluated against a set of criteria that has been established for the class in which they are entered. Judging will be done in private prior to the opening of the Festival.

Announcement of Winners

Winners will be notified by telephone. Winners agree that their names will be posted on the Buckhorn Community Centre (BCC) website and the Festival of the Arts Social Media pages.
